Are unsure which ones are the correct decals / stickers for your AE86? This page will help you identify your car or the look you want in four simple questions.
The first question to answer is which of the four territories your car originated from and what was its model name. The second question to answer is whether your car is a pre-facelift or post-facelift car. The third question to answer is what body shape it has: a 2-door (hardtop coupé) or a 3-door (hatchback coupé). The fourth question to answer is the trim level of your car. Once we have answered all four questions, it will be simple to find the correct decals / stickers for your car.
AE86 territories
The Toyota AE86 was mainly sold in five territories: Japan, United States & Canada, Europe, Australia and Switzerland.
In Japan the AE86 was sold either as the Toyota Corolla Levin or the Toyota Sprinter Trueno. The Sprinter Trueno featured popup headlamps while the Corolla Levin featured normal fixed ones.
In the United States and Canada the AE86 was sold as the Toyota Corolla and looked similar to the Sprinter Trueno as it also featured the popup headlamps, however it did differ in bumper style.
In Europe (UK, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Finland, Portugal and Greece) the AE86 was sold as the Toyota Corolla Coupé. It looked almost exactly the same as the Japanese Corolla Levin.
In Australia the AE86 was sold as the Toyota Corolla Sprinter and looked almost exactly the same as the Japanese Corolla Levin. To confuse even more, the tail lights used are the ones featured on the Japanese Sprinter Trueno.
In Switzerland the AE86 was sold both as the Toyota Corolla SR and the Toyota Corolla GTi.
Naturally the decals / stickers differ between these regions and models, but at the same time some of them are quite similar. For instance, the Japanese cars all have either Trueno or Levin decals / stickers on the side moulding between the door and rear arch.
We don’t have any decals / stickers for Australian cars as these cars did not come with any decals / stickers. The only badging available on these cars were the badge on the grille and the Sprinter writing in the right tail light.
Unfortunately we don’t have any decals / stickers for Swiss cars as the designs differs greatly from the decals / stickers from other regions.
Pre-facelift or post-facelift
The AE86 received two facelifts: one minor in March 1984 and a major in May 1985. In Japan the pre-facelift is called zenki (early), the minor facelift is called chuuki (mid) and the major facelift is called kouki (late). Generally we only consider the major one to be a true facelift, so often the cars are designated as either zenki or kouki. To find out if your car is zenki or kouki, you simply take the production date of your car and if it was built before May 1985 it will be an early type and after a late type.
The decals / stickers differ between the early and late type and therefore you have to choose the ones that fit with your car. Naturally previous owners could have swapped parts (bumpers, grille, head lamps, etc) to make an early type look like a late type. If this is the case, a late type decal / sticker set would be more appropriate. The same applies if you reverse the these two.
Another thing to consider is that the plexiglass grille on the late type Corolla Levin features a Levin decal / sticker. The same grille was available on the European Corolla coupé, but here it featured a Toyota decal / sticker instead.
2-door or 3-door
The AE86 was sold as either a 3-door hatchback coupé or a 2-door hardtop coupé. Or as the Irish would say: a hatch or a booter. The 3-door hatchback naturally has a hatch that serves as a tailgate. The 2-door hardtop looks more like a 2-door sedan, doesn’t have a tailgate and features a boot / trunk with a bootlid / trunklid.
The reason why this matters is because some of the decals / stickers differ in design whether they are applied to a 2-door or a 3-door.
AE86 trim levels
Trim levels are the final step in identifying your decals / stickers. This matters because one of the decals will feature the trim level. Naturally we can’t supply decals / stickers for every trim level, but we are able to do some custom work if necessary.
For Japanese cars we feature the Apex Twin Cam 16, GTV Twin Cam 16 and GT Twin Cam 16 trim levels. For cars sold in the United States and Canada we feature the GT-S and SR5 trim levels. For cars sold in Europe we have the GT Twin Cam 16 decal / sticker in a different size.
